Rickman on SIGGRAPH

by Andrew Stern · , 5:00 pm

I meant to post this a few days ago when I initially read it — our antimodal friend Brandon Rickman, a frequent GTxA commenter, has written a couple of posts (1 2) about SIGGRAPH from two weeks ago. Sounds like as we feared, SIGGRAPH’s appeal has dwindled a bit when compared to previous recent years, particularly the art gallery and panel sessions.

Hey, someone’s gotta do the cranky-work around here.

At ISEA I asked Ken Perlin what he thought about SIGGRAPH this year. He said it was great, one of the best SIGGRAPHs he’s been to in years. He mostly went to the technical graphics paper sections, and said he came away with a bunch of new ideas for research. He also said emerging technologies was great, precisely because it didn’t try to be an art venue, but just demonstrate new technologies with interesting interactive possibilities. For him, the only disappointing part of the conference was the art show – it wasn’t clear why it was there at all. This is a sad decline from the heyday of the art show, where the primarily interactive exhibits clearly demonstrated new conceptual possibilities for interactive technology.
