New Award for Digital Literature
Hermeneia, a research group focusing on literary studies and digital technology at the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC), has teamed up with the Vinaròs Town Council to create a new award for digital literature: the “Ciutat de Vinaròs” Digital Literature prize. Submissions can be in English, French, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish or Catalan, and two 2,500 euro awards will be given in the categories of “Narrative” and “Poetry.” The deadline is 8th September 2005, and only unpublished works are eligible. 1ST INTERNATIONAL PRIZE “CIUTAT DE VINARÒS” ON DIGITAL LITERATURE
The Department of Culture and Education of the Vinaròs Town Council and Hermeneia, a research group into literary studies and digital technology at the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC), is holding the first edition of the “Ciutat de Vinaròs” Digital Literature prize.
RULES
Object.
The object of these prizes is to promote the creativity of literature through new forms of writing. The prizes will be awarded to the best works of digital literature for Narrative and Poetry. There will also be a special “Vicent Ferrer Romero” mention for the best work of digital literature that uses mainly Catalan. We understand digital literature to be all types of literature created from and by the digital space, fundamentally the computer, that cannot be published on a traditional press without sacrificing or altering significant elements of the work, as well as literature with multimedia content or other interactive features.
Requirements.
The competition is open to everyone over the age of 18. Works entered for these prizes must be unpublished and written in one of the following languages: English, French, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish or Catalan. Works that have already won prizes in other competitions will not be considered. Each participant may only present a maximum of one work in each category.
Deadline for submission of work.
Work should be sent to Hermeneia (Estudios de Humanidades y Filología. Av. Tibidabo, 39. 08018 Barcelona. Spain) in a sealed envelope with the title I PREMIO “CIUDAD DE VINARÓS” DE LITERATURA DIGITAL and the category, “Narrative” or “Poetry”. The envelopes should include three copies recorded on CD, and another sealed envelope, on the outside of which only the title, pseudonym or slogan, as the case may be, and the technical information required to read the work should appear; the envelope should contain the details of the author or authors (name, address, telephone number and e-mail address), a photocopy of their National Identity Document or passport and country of origin, as well as a brief profile of their literary career, to preserve initial anonymity.
Deadline for submitting work: 8 September 2005
Characteristics of the works: Open theme. They must be original and unpublished.
Prize money.
Prize money of 2,500 euros for each category (narrative and poetry). The special “Vicent Ferrer Romero” mention will carry 1,000 euros prize money. The corresponding income tax deduction will be applied to the prize money.
Jury.
The mayor will appoint the members of the jury, which will include a chairman, secretary and four members, plus three specialists of acknowledged standing in the study of digital literature who will be appointed by the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya. Its composition will be made public the day after the deadline for the submission of work.
Decision.
The jury’s decision will be final and the prize, in either category, may be declared void. The jury will have full authority to resolve any incident not covered by the rules. The prizes will be awarded at a public ceremony during the literature week, which will be held during the holiday of 9 October.
The winning work will remain the property of Vinaròs Town Council, which will decide on their publication. Should the town council decide not to publish the work, Hermeneia reserves the right to publish on the Internet, on its website, both the winning works and those considered to be of special interest, with prior authorisation from the authors. Works that do not win must be collected by their authors at the Department of Culture and Education of the Vinaròs Town Council (Plaza San Telmo, s/n. Edificio Pirulí, 1r piso), from 15 to 25 December 2005, between 9 am and 2 pm, presenting their National Identity Document, or by individuals expressly authorised by the author, presenting their National Identity Document and the corresponding authorisation. After this date, the town council will destroy any originals that have not been collected.
Participation in this competition implies acceptance of the rules.
Participants waive their own code of law and submit themselves to the courts of Vinaròs for the resolution of legal conflicts that may arise from their participation in the competition.

That’s excellent! I wish the ELO could come up with the funding to do the same. Kudos to the people of Vinaròs and Hermeneia on their vision.
