This is gonna make Rez look like Qix

by Nick Montfort · , 6:05 pm

Lately I’ve been playing a lot of Tempest 2000 — an excellent game that, along with the movie Tron, certainly was an inspiration for Rez. So I thought I’d check out what the designer of this game, the Yak (a.k.a. Jeff Minter), has been up to. As it turns out, this programmer of true cult classics, whose company is named Llamasoft, is collaborating with Peter Molyneux (Black & White) of Lionhead Studios on a GameCube puzzle-shooter.

Trippy screenshot from early Unity codeUnity is a fabulous journey through a succession of beautiful abstract 3D spaces, with gameplay varying in tempo, from fast paced shooting to a more gentle progression. Audio effects will be closely linked with the games pace and tempo and will be an integral part of the playing experience.

An interview with the Yak about the game is online in GameSpy. Video captures of a lot of other screen shots are already online, thanks to VLM Journal. These come from code that had been developed already last January.

I think the pharmecuetical industry is going to take a serious hit when this comes out. And, I’ll say one other thing: this looks r0x0rial.

I knew that feature of Rez would be mentioned in the first comment.

ARRRRGH I can’t add an <img> tag to a comment. If I could, I’d show you another, more recent screenshot, taken from here.
